The first thing that caught our attention was seeing some of the children that we worked with at Strong Hearts. We were warmly greeted as it seems like that’s all you receive in Ethiopia is warm greetings. We visited the sanctuary and when they told us that they seated around 300 here I thought that we could get about 3000 in our church if people would just scorch together a little. This is one of those things that we as Americans could learn from the Ethiopians. We need to remember why we enter the sanctuary. It is not about comfort zones, personal space bubbles, but about worshiping the Lord!
After leaving the church, we walked the streets and had the privilege to meet some of the “Forgotten People.” Just as in biblical times, these people have been isolated from the rest of the masses. What joy came across their faces as we entered what they called their home. I had the opportunity to be able to pray for several of them and was blessed by the chance to do so.
From shanty to shanty, face to face, I prayed that we were bringing some hope and encouragement to them even if just for this day. We stepped into structures that that these people born in the image of God were living in that we wouldn’t put animals in at home. Pieces of steel and plastic salvaged from the landfill just like some of their meals. How sad!
I think of how our worst hardened criminals in America are treated like royalty compared to these forgotten ones who are living like rats or moles in their dark, damp shanties. One thought just keeps repeating itself, over and over; IT’S JUST NOT RIGHT! IT’S JUST NOT RIGHT!
We must ask what we can do to help. How can we help, How can we help??????
We spent time at the Alert Hospital Rehab Center, where people were embroidering, crocheting, weaving, and spinning cotton. Cotton????? Yes cotton! We brought a spinning wheel with us to teach them how to spin wool, to replace their method of using drop spindles, or at least help them to do it more efficiently; but Anna had never spun cotton.
It was great to see the expressions on their faces as we entered the dimly lit room; Some of excitement, some of wonder, and those of skepticism. As Anna tried to spin the cotton, she quickly had an Ethiopian woman trying her hand at. After a few fail attempts, it looked like it might catch on. [Upon returning the next day, the one woman seemed to be able to spin on her own! How exciting!]
The Rehab center has a store where the beautiful products they produce can be purchased for a tiny amount of money compared to all the work and time that goes into them. If you are ever in Ethiopia, you must visit the rehab center and Korah!
John~

Thoughts from Lisa

I have spent the last five days surrounded by some of the neediest children in the world.
I have spent the last five days surrounded by some of the most loving children in the world.
I have spent the last five days surrounded by some of the most precious children in His sight, and I will never, ever be the same. I don’t want to ever be the same. My time at Strong Hearts has changed my life forever.
As a teacher, I knew that I would love the children of Ethiopia. I told myself that “children are children”, no matter where they are from. While this is true to some degree, I have found that the children of Ethiopia are so much more. Their trusting eyes look up at me in eager anticipation, and my heart melts. Their toes peek through the ends of battered, dirty shoes, and my heart breaks. What do I have to offer these priceless little lives? The songs I sing with them do not even come close to meeting their most basic needs of food, shelter, water and clean, well-fitting clothing. Why do they seem to adore me so, when all I can give them is a few hours distraction from their bleak lives?
And yet…they greet me with an enthusiastic, “Good morning, Teacher” (spoken proudly in broken English, which is MUCH better than my feeble attempts at Amharic), and say goodbye with an enthusiastic kiss on the cheek. And even though the kisses are a mix of unwashed faces and runny noses, I don’t mind because I know their love is unconditional. And their love challenges mine. They have nothing, yet they offer everything. I have everything…yet what do I offer?
I have been told that I sometimes “wear my heart on my sleeve”. This week I met a man who wears his heart on his sleeve, his pant leg, his shoe, his hands and his face. His passion is inspiring. His vision is contagious. His work is life-changing. And despite all this, he is one of the most humble men I have ever met. And though he may never read this, I want to say a big “Amesegenalehu” to Dundee for letting me be a part of the Strong Hearts family. It has definitely changed me forever.
Last night I came across a Scripture that at any other time in my life I may have simply skimmed over:
“Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” – Psalm 82:3-4
I feel like my short time here in Ethiopia has only been a drop of water in an ocean of desperate need. But even a small drop causes a ripple that grows and changes. My prayer is that the time I have spent here will not end with my departure from the Bole airport, but that what I have seen, heard and experienced will grow me, mould me and make me more like Christ.

Lisa (“Consecrated to God”)

“Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ’s compassion for the world is to look out; yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good; and yours are the hands with which He is to bless us now.” –St. Teresa of Avila

Wednesday

From Kayla:

Fellow Ferenges (white people),

This morning was our last VBS at Strong Hearts. We once again enjoyed our time with the children. I wasn’t the only one with tears in my eyes when it came time to say good bye to them. Dundee and all the teachers thanked our whole team for everything that we’d done. They had been so blessed. It felt like we should be thanking them. We may have been more blessed than they were. He gifted each of us with a beautiful scarf that was made here. It was a mixed feeling accepting a gift from he who has so little. After lunch we finally drove out to Korah, where the leper colony is. Each day, we thought we might go there, and each day God had something different in mind. His plan is ‘generally’ better than ours, so we praise him for redirecting us. Our tour guide was Samuel. He’d grown up in the despair of Korah, rejected by most of society. One day when he was a teenager, a white missionary waved, smiled, and conversed with him. This behavior so intrigued him that he inquired about that missionary, and finding the difference was Jesus, became a follower of Christ himself. He is now part of a growing church in the colony. They have approximately 300 people that attend on a Sunday morning. The people pack into a small building constructed mostly by tarps. The men we met were so passionate about telling these people about Jesus. They also try to educate them in a small school, but are limited by facilities. He led us through the muddy, stony “streets” and even into some people’s homes. The homes were dark, some partially underground. We were told that during the rainy season water runs right into the homes, and the people sleep practically in the water. Samuel said that many people live together in these dwellings; 6-8 people per room. Some houses were adjoined inside, sharing among several families. We saw many leprosy victims: people that had one or no legs, stubs for arms, no fingers, and infectious skin. It is very difficult to get wheel chairs, and to push them on the streets if they get them. Therefore, the crippled drag themselves along the ground if they wish to move. We met one such senior citizen. He sat in front of his make-shift house, with one leg and a half. He played an old cracked pipe for us. Then I pulled out my ukulele, and we all sang him “This Is the Day” in Amharic. He loved it. We were led into a building, which Samuel said was the first ever built in Korah. There were women spinning wool on drop spindles with incredible skill. They had been spinning for 35 years, and were earning a mere $7 a month. Anna brought in a spinning wheel we brought from America, and proceeded to teach the women how it works. They were apprehensive at first, but took to it eventually. Anna claimed it was the best time she’d had all week. We also saw women sewing lace tablecloths, which had taken 3 months to complete what they had sewn thus far. An elderly man on the porch was weaving a foot mat. He had no fingers and hardly palms, eaten by leprosy. Yet he wove and wove with a large toothless smile. Another man inside was weaving on a huge loom at an impressive speed. Upstairs, people were designing intricate patterns and embroidering them on shirts, blankets, table runners, etc… Finally, we were taken into a room where their products are for sale. They were absolutely beautiful, and so under-priced for the work put into it. We are going to purchase many of our souvenirs there. Tomorrow, the rest of the team is going to the drop-in center to minister to street children. I am getting dropped off in the morning to shadow the doctor at the Alert Hospital. The nurse said they have cases of leprosy, HIV, and tuberculosis to name a few. I may encounter them all.

This has been such a great adventure. It has been a heart-wrenching, somber adventure, which has changed our lives and perspectives. But it is so good.

Please continue to pray,

Kayla

Tuesday

From Kayla:

Salam!

Today was another full and rewarding day. At 5:30 this morning, Getcho drove me, mom, and John Forenz to Soddo. Although it is a five hour drive, I much enjoyed watching the scenery go by. Squiggly, flat-topped trees and gnarled shrubs dotted the savannah. I expected Bagiera the panther to jump from any of the branches. ;) Once, a hyena ran across the road. He was big and ugly. Suddenly, I appreciated the graceful deer that interrupt our driving at home. We passed many mud coated houses and grass thatched huts. They looked just like the pictures. The country villages that we passed were very impoverished, more so than in Addis Ababa where we are staying. Many of the roads were wet and the red soil badly eroded. The people passing on the road looked weary under the burdens they carried on their backs or their heads. I felt especially sorry for them when it started to rain. Getcho dropped us off at the hospital where Harry Bower works as an optometrist. He took us over to his house where his wife Stephane made us the best cups of tea in the world, with two lumps of sugar and heated milk. Stephane is the operator of the orphanage in Soddo. This is where the Forenz family adopted their three daughters last year. John showed recent pictures of the girls to their caretakers there. Stephane gave us a tour of their orphanage. The children, of course, were smiling and adorable. And oh, the babies! Melt my heart till it can be poured from a jug! Unfortunately, we were not permitted to take pictures of the children. So all of you should come, see them for yourselves, and take one or six home with you. We were told that there are at least 200 children on a waiting list to come into the orphanage. We couldn’t stay long because we had a five hour drive home, (although it might have taken less time going 110 km/h.) My poor terrified mother.

For those of you who went to Guatemala, Getcho is much like Manuel. He doesn’t text, but he talks on his phone. There are not 11,000 ft. drops, but there are NO traffic rules. None. Guatemala driving was more structured, if you can imagine.

As for the other groups, well, I don’t know. But reports say they are doing well. Love to all.

Chou,

Kayla

Monday

Today we started our Vacation Bible School with 29 of the most adorable little 3-5 year old kids at Strong Hearts International. They were loads of fun. We had bible story time, Craft time, Music and Gym.
These precious little ones are from the Leper community. We did meet an adorable little girl whose parents are dead due to HIV/Aides. She is staying with her grandmother. This little girl is HIV positive also and even if she can get the medication, she needs food to take the medicine with. To hold this little girls in your arms and realize that she may have a death sentence in just heart breaking. Kayla spent a lot of time with her just letting her know what love is. It was wonderful listening to them sing along with Lisa and the Snazzy CD. You should be able to see pictures at http://strh.binghamacademy.net/index.htm
After lunch we rest for a short bit and then headed out to the area up in the city where the millennium celebration was held, to play soccer with Ephram’s boys. Jessie played great! Bryan, Anna, and I played hard, and I tripped Zi (who works for the Guest House) and drew blood. It really was an accident! Really! We had a great time and boy oh boy those guys can play. This was the first time I felt the elevation change.
Everything seems to be going well with all those over at Les and Maxine’s teaching English and building relationships.
God is working throughout the team as conversations such as “when I come back” are taking place on a regular schedule. How exciting to see lives transformed before your very eyes. I am truly blessed by the Lord to be here with this team! Thank you Lord, and thank you to all those praying for us!
John~

Sundays Highlights

WOW! I guess that is the only way to sum up our Sunday. We started the day with an Ethiopian church service that lasted 2 ½ hours, but what an energy charged service with the blessing of a double wedding ceremony! Our whole team was together for this experience or should I say blessing. The one bride was blind and there was a whole blind choir that sang beautifully for them. The pastor told us that because these two couples were poor that they have their ceremony during the regular church service. This is a very effective way to help encourage other poor people to do the same. The one thing that we weren’t so keen on was the fact that after the vows are given a hand shake is done between the bride and groom. We Americans love our kisses!
After the service we broke into 3 groups with me, Sarah, Kayla, and Jessica, going to The Mothers House; Bryan, Alesia, Lisa, and Anna, going to Tesfa’s house; and Shandelle, Lindsay, John S. and Nicole going to Hannah’s house. We all ate too much authentic Ethiopian food, but had a wonderful time with all the girls, learning Amharic, getting our hair braided (of course they tried my arms, and even eyeballed my chest but one must draw the line somewhere.) It seems as though at every house was great fellowship, friendships, singing and dancing. No one wanted to leave, and this was proven by us being a little late for Strong Hearts 2nd movie night. I must say that Anna was taken right in by one of the girls, and didn’t want to leave. Every one of us has experienced a love and acceptance from all we have come in contact with, and it is wonderful.
The Spirit of God is certainly moving here and we watch in awe. Jessica stepped forward tonight (Lisa spoke last night and was equally as awesome) to speak to the children after the movie, as God lead her. She was awesome in her presentation. Totally stepping out of her comfort zone! But what she said was wonderful and it was so cool that the girl who told me hours before that she didn’t really feel as though she should speak, was moved by the Spirit of God, and used by Him beautifully!
Lisa, Kayla and Jessica also warmed up the crowd before the movie with singing and dancing! The children, young and old loved it! Older guys were dancing and singing which was so cool because that same age group in America never would have moved an inch. But these guys were getting down tonight. John S, Anna, and I shook many hands and took lots of pictures.
At the end of the evening God brought forth 18 children to ask Jesus in their hearts. How Awesome is that! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
Keep praying for more souls to be welcomed into the Kingdom of God. The teams’ hearts are being broken for the things that break the heart of God. Hallelujah!

Ethiopia- Saturday Evening

Tonight we headed back to Strong Hearts International, for movie night. The movie theater was awesome, once the rain stopped and the sheet dried. Showing the movie outside was nice but the damp wood didn’t let the bonfire really get hot enough. I was blessed to have an adorable little girl who was probably 3 years old sit next to me and hold my hand all movie long. Every time I looked down at her, I pictured my little girl about the same age. I had tears flowing out of my eyes when I thought of her future here in Ethiopia. Would she be raped or pregnant before 14 years old? Would she be destined to carry wood for the rest of her life? Would she contract HIV/Aids? Or will she be dead before any of these things could happen to her because of starvation or malnutrition? As I reflect on just how precious she was to me, I can only imagine how God sees her. Then I’m reminded that He sees all of us the same, Beautiful, Precious, Created in his own image. Priceless! Yes Priceless; that’s how he sees each and every one of us even as sinners. Yet he loves us! We let Him down, but He still loves us. This is the true Agape’ love that we see in the bible; and perhaps I was feeling for this little girl, and all those watching the film tonight. Oh yes, I remember praying that God would break my heart for the things that break His, and once again it has happened. But not just to me this time. In walks Lisa, Jessica, and Kayla. Tonight Lisa, Jessica, and Kayla had their hearts broken for the Ethiopian children as they watched the transforming power of the Holy Spirit at work during the viewing of the “Jesus Film.” At the end of the film, Lisa address the audience and poured out God’s passion for them to know the True and Living God. I followed asking them not to deny Christ 3 times as Peter did, but to except him now. Through Gedinet, we asked all who wanted to make a change in their lives forever and have the hope of and future of Christ, to come forward and we would pray with them. From the crowd of 205 children, about 12 came forward to receive Christ as Lord.
Tonight we gave the Hope of the Future, Jesus Christ!! Praise God!
John~

Ethiopian trip 2010 - We made it!!

Friday morning at 7:15 we touched down at Bole International Airport. It was only 12 hours later than expected, but every one of us was in great spirits. We knew from the beginning that this was God’s trip and it would unfold as He wanted it to. We ended up spending 10 hours in Paris France which was cool because none of us had ever been there, but 10 hours in the AIRPORT!!! Is NOT so cool! We also had the opportunity to fly Air France and Ethiopian Air which were good trips. As we headed to baggage, we all wondered if we would find anything, but thanks to all those who have been praying for those bags, each and every one of the 29 checked bags were there and went through Ethiopian Customs with only one minor problem with the projector I brought, and that was fixed by a 20 dollar bill. Image the fact that corruption knows no boundaries.
For the 9 team members who have never been here before their eyes where wide open as we traveled to the Guest House, Zi answered the many questions that arose. Once at the guest house, we sorted out the donations and personal items, giving those going to Les and Maine’s a chance to shower up and have a quick lunch. Right after lunch, we went to Les and Maxine’s and filled their living room with the many blessings that so many had donated. So exciting!
Lisa had about 20 minutes to start her “Purity Talk,” which you could see kind of through her, but when we pick her up later, you could see that relationships had begun with all who were there.
The rest of us had a wonderful dinner with the two missionaries who work in Soddo. He is a medical eye doctor, and she runs the orphanage there, where my 3 latest daughters came from. What a wonderful and informative evening listening to how God is using them, but on the same hand how difficult it is for them to see infant death in the morning, and a new sick, burned or abandoned child at their door in the evening. The decisions that they make are so very, very, difficult, and hit them every day. They were so pleased to see the condition of 3 my girls that they had rescued over a year ago, knowing that they had made the right decisions. They were so happy to see all of the donations, and definitely touched to see all the Soy Formula. They also commented on the fact that everything went through customs, but we assured them that our prayer warriors took care of that! They planned to dress all the babies in the outfits that Shandelle and Jessica’s grandmother made and send us a picture. We called it a night as John S, I and a few others were literally falling asleep on our feet.

Saturday Morning
We dropped John S off at the Williams’ and the rest of us went to Strong Hearts International to work with the Pre teen group. That went very well with them asking Jessica and Kayla to show a little Ty Kwon Do sparing, which they did. They were impressed. Lisa and Kayla were asked to sing and play the Ukulele. Bryan was asked how fast he could run, which of course he explained it depended who was chasing him. And finally, I was asked to do pushups.(they only wanted 10, but I gave them 12. This evening we will be there for movie night and follow the Spirit for direction.
Oh yes, and how could I forget? Gedinet ask for me to give a message at which God instantly gave me the verse in Jeremiah Chapter 3 verse 5.”Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” I got a little nervous but as I was reading further, I discovered Verse 8 says “Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you” declares the Lord. So I shared with them that each one of them was specially made by God and had a specific reason and purpose for their life. That it doesn’t matter whether you are American, Korean, or Ethiopian; you are special to God and he has a plan for your life, and He can use you if you are obedient. Mmmmm…….. That is the same message for all of us isn’t it???? Obedience, that’s why we are here and God is using us!
That’s all for now.
John~

Meet the Feb. 2010 Ethiopian Team

Meet the Ethiopian Team

John F. – Team Leader

About Me: I am 49 years old, soon to turn the big “50”, although I feel like 29 and very often are found acting younger than that. Korea and 3 from Ethiopia) ages 16, 14, 12, 11, 8, 6, 5, 4, and 2. The trip to Ethiopia to adopt our last 3 children is when God truly broke my heart for those less fortunate than us which is about 99% of the world’s population. He has shown me how much I have and how selfish I have been all my life and now is the time change, before it is too late.

Favorite Scripture: Revelation 3:16 – “So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

Ministry Involvement: Currently besides being this Missions Team Leader, I am a Home Group Leader and Family Ministries Director. I was excited to spend the summer helping out in any way I could, but for some reason God closed that door. In retrospect, I realize that He was preparing my heart for Ethiopia. Last March I had two new additions to my 5th and 6th Grade Girls Sunday School class, Mandy and Abby, two beautiful young ladies from Ethiopia. In my ten years as a teacher (and even more as a Sunday School teacher), I have never prepared more for a lesson than for those first few months with Mandy and Abby. It was my responsibility to make Sunday School appealing and memorable to these beautiful young ladies that understood very little of what was being taught while at the same time reaching the ten other students that had attending church their entire life! But honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way! Mandy and Abby have helped me to see the Scriptures through new ears and the world in which I live through new eyes. They, along with their adorable little sister Maria, have shown me a trusting, unconditional love that we as Americans have somehow lost in the midst of our cynicism and self-preservationist attitude. When John’s family shared with our congregation their experiences in travelling to Addis Ababa to meet their beautiful new daughters, John mentioned that he would like to go again, this time with a short-term team from our church. I knew without a doubt that this was the experience that God had been preparing me for. I'm excited to use the gifts that God has blessed me with to interact with the precious children of Ethiopia! I know that He will continue to open my eyes to the need around me and break my heart for the things that break His!

Favorite Scripture: Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

And Psalm 139

Ministry Involvement: I am currently the Sunday School Superintendent of our church, 5th and 6th grade girls Sunday School Teacher, Local Church Board Member, and the VBS Music Director.

Current Status, Occupation: Single and ready mingle :-) , Employed as a K–12th grades Vocal Music Teacher.

What Are You Looking Forward to The Most On This Trip? Singing with the children, and sharing the love of Christ with those I meet.

Nicole

About Me: I'm Nicole :) I grew up in Conhocton, NY and am the youngest of 3 daughters. I graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2006 and am currently employed by Pathways, Inc. as a speech therapist for preschoolers with disabilities. I became a Christian in September 2006 and am continually amazed by how awesome and patient God truly is!
I felt compelled to go on this mission’s trip after John shared a video about needs of people in Ethiopia. My knee-jerk reaction was to block out their suffering because it didn't immediately affect me. I had become apathetic to stories of poverty/hunger/disease, how horrible?! God made it clear that I needed a LARGE lesson in demonstrating compassion for people who face devastating circumstances. Soon I will be putting names to those faces, listening to their stories of despair, and seeing life through their eyes. My prayer is that I am able to share Christ with all of the people that I encounter and respond with the love, concern, mercy, and hope that He has shown me.

Favorite Scripture: Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Ministry Involvement: 3rd and 4th grade Sunday School Teacher, No previous Missions experience.

Current Status, Occupation: Single; Employed as a Speech Therapist.

What Are You Looking Forward to The Most On This Trip? Seeing how God is going to use all of us in our group during the course of our trip and beyond this trip, and making new friends.

Sarah

About Me: My name is Sarah; I am a 16 year old high school student. As we pulled up outside the compound, the doorway open and you could hear the voices of many children having fun inside. As we entered the compound we were warmly greeted by Gedinet, The Executive Director of Strong Hearts International. The ministry at Strong Hearts is one where they believe that it is not just food, clothing, shelter and money that can solve poverty, but by building relationships and then freeing the people from the bondage of sin with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Strong Hearts has a Street Ministry, Child Care and Youth Development Ministry, Soccer Ministry, Drug Rehab Ministry, Bible Study Cell groups, and let’s not forget the Leper Colony Ministry which is a community of over 10,000 people that live around Addis Ababa’s Garbage Dump. At the Learning Center where we were, there were about 60 children which about 75% of them were from the Leper Colony. Gedinet stated that at one point they asked the children “Not” from the Colony what they wanted to be when they grew up. The answers were like doctors, and other respectable jobs. When they asked the Children from the Leper colony, their answer was a “Garbage Scratcher”. See this is what their parents do. They spend all day scratching the ground to find something to eat. Nice huh? Remember this is a Leper colony so many of them don’t even have fingers do to the leprosy.

We also met with Bisrat tonight who works with the children at the “Drop In Center” or CHE (Children’s Home Ethiopia). It turns out that he grew up in the Orthodox Monastery and became a monk. Then someone came into the Monastery and told him about Jesus. He then on his own he read the Scriptures to see what they said to him and he asked Jesus to be his Savior. We the Monastery found out that he was a follower of Jesus; they kicked him out of the Monastery and thru him in jail for three days with no food. After 3 days they took him from Jail and put him on the roof of a vehicle and took him 5 km away and dumped him. He was age 18 at the time. They would not let him ride in the vehicle because he would make the demons posses it. I learned a wealth of knowledge about the Orthodox church which anyone adopting an older child that’s been raised that way may want to know, especially if they are Christians.(e-mail me) Bisrat now belong to a church that feeds the lepers once a week and share the Gospel with them. The lepers believe that the sins of their forefathers have brought this on them. The reason the USA does see this is because we were founded by Godly men, and even today we have “In God We Trust” on our money. They also believe that Ethiopia is a demon possessed country and that is why it has such rich and fertile ground but its people are so poor. After all look at the Middle East, it has nothing but sand, but is so wealthy. Apparently the people have not heard that “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God”! This gives you an idea of how many years of false teaching has hardened the hearts of some. But on the other hand, those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior are radically transformed. Praise God! And their testimonies are so powerful to here!

Besides the visit with Gedinet and Bisrat, we also visited CWAE (Christian World Adoption Ethiopia) where our girls came from. I delivered letters and gifts from the girls to the Staff and Nannies. It was a very emotional time for me just re-walking the steps of 6 months ago as well as seeing Zewdu, Robel, Baza, Helen and Huddush. I also got to see Danna’s (from Beth’s message board) 3 children who are just waiting for their Embassy date so they can go home. (which Robel said should happen very soon) They are doing great and if they have any cavities when they come home you can blame me as we gave them all lollipops. I also delivered a few notes and “lots” of lollipops to Degnesh, and gave her a “Huge” hug for my 11 year old daughter.

After shaking hands and handing out lots of suckers we traveled out of Addis to the location of the new CWAE “Acacia Village”, which is under construction, and will house 200 children when complete. We even got the grand tour from Huddush, the Director himself. They hope to be moving children in by the end of the calendar year. I guess their construction crews work a little faster than ours, but with the equipment they use I can’t see how.
We did have a little unplanned excitement today. As we were on our way to CWAE, when Joseph ran over something in the road and got a flat tire. The poor guy felt so bad and Bryan and I made sure we picked on him the rest of the day about it. He is such a good sport and just a great guy and can take our American humor pretty good. I’m not sure if any of them will ever want to see us again, but we have had a lot of fun with Joseph and the staff. They gave us their Facebook addresses, but we keep asking them if they will “really” accept us as friends or if they are just being nice. But we told them that they better accept us or we could jump on a plane and be here in 22 hours to settle it with them. Anyway we left Joseph with the flat tire even after I offered to change it for him. So Bryan, Matadel (Mat tea) from the guest house, and I started walking. It wasn’t very far and we soon arrived at CWAE, and Joseph caught up within a half an hour.

The other exciting thing that happened was when we were visiting Strong Hearts International and the children requested Bryan, myself, Joseph and Ephraem to either sing or dance for them. Oh yeah you got that right! So naturally I had to start. I guess its part of being a leader. Anyway, I sang He is the “King of Kings”, Bryan sang “Jesus Loves the Little Children”, Joseph did about a 5 second dance, and Ephraem sang “This is the Day the Lord Has Made” in Amharic. This was the first request of the children. After this they started to ask us questions, like what size shoes we wear, how many children in our families, what did we want to be when we were younger, how old we were and a few more. They also sang for us and told us a few jokes. I videotaped a lot of it, but sorry; Not Bryan and I singing! A man has to know his limitations! I’m surprised you couldn’t hear the dogs howling all the way in America!
That’s all for today, and only one more to go. Keep praying for us and our families as we miss them so dearly.
Thank you and God Bless!
John

The Power of Good and Evil
Wednesday August 18, 2009

As many of you know, scripture tells us the world is not about flesh and blood, but about the powers of good and evil. From conversations with the many Christians we meet and the more we learn about Ethiopia, we see that this is so very true here. The battle is over souls. The battle is won by Satin with every child that is not adopted, every street child that is starving and receives no love, every HIV/AIDS victim and doesn’t get help, and every soul that perishes without the Love of Jesus. As Bryan and I go about Gods business here, we can see this battle more than perhaps we see it at home and maybe this is because we are so busy at home to pay attention. Or maybe it is because we are a “Christian” Nation. Perhaps Satin is targeting the weaker because the victory is easier for him. Last night we learned that this country is slowly turning more Muslim because of the fact that people are allowed to travel to the Middle East for job opportunities. As they leave here as an Orthodox or perhaps even with no faith at all, they return to Ethiopia as Muslims.
As I left the States, I could see the battle in my family so clearly as Satin would want nothing more than Bryan and I to stay home. With 9 children the strife increase to high levels with some of the children to the point where if I didn’t have spent so much money I easily could of stayed home. Many of you know that when you are a Sunday school teacher, or going to witness the Gospels love for mankind, that Satin will cause trouble or place doubt in your mind that you’re doing the wrong thing. A great example would be how every morning during the week, your children get up, get dress, and may go through all the so called “Normal” activities with no problems. But what kind of Chaos breaks out on Sunday morning when you’re try to get them out to church.
With all this said, please pray for Bryan and I even harder than before. Please pray for our family’s even more than that as we don’t want Satin to win any battles. Please pray specifically against the powers of evil, and for our children, and our wives, as with our absence every tear that’s cried every disagreement or fight that breaks out, or even just any problem big or small, just makes everything more difficult for everyone.
For those of you who have been faithfully praying I ask of you to please step it up a notch, as the battle belongs to the Lord!
Thank you for every prayer lifted to Heaven for our Families, ourselves, and the lost and dying world that is all around us.
May God richly bless you today!
John~

Meeting with Les, Pastor Abdissa, and SIM

Meeting with Les, Pastor Abdissa, and SIM
Tuesday August 18, 2009

Today’s day started at 8:30 AM and finished at 5:30 PM, almost a normal day, well I did say almost normal. As my beautiful wife warned me, “You should be careful how much you schedule in one day”, she is a very wise women. Although Bryan and I met all of our appointments, we keep showing up late for lunch and dinner. Tonight I thought we could sneak in a little shopping but Bryan warned me that we would be late for dinner. That wouldn’t be so bad except we, I mean “I” messed up lunch. Our Guest House was expecting us, we show up a half hour late, and then realize that we were supposed to have lunch with Pastor Abdissa. So with many apologies we skip the lunch at the Guest House and travel 45 minutes to meet with Pastor Abdissa. Now get this, not knowing anything about this Pastor, we arrive at this place called Children’s House International. The Pastor met us at the car warmly welcoming these two “LATE” Americans. (Only 15 minutes, but still late) He then ushered us inside and up the stairs to a room filled with small children and 5 American Families that were there getting their children. They were all eating a wonderful lunch which we got to join in on. But here’s the killer… two of the families are staying in the other guest house, one of the families is staying with us, and another family was a man and his son who we met at the airport flying into Addis. What a surprise! It turns out that Pastor Abdissa pastors a church of his own, is Vice President of a the Denominational Church here in Ethiopia that has a half a million members, and in his spare time is the Director of Children’s House International Adoption Agency. (And I thought I had a lot to do) He let us visit the Foster home which was loaded with the beautiful little girls and boys you’d ever want to see. (If only we had big suitcases; and it were that easy.) The girl children outnumbered the boys by probably 2:1. Most of them were sleeping as it was the after lunch nap time, and that made them all the more precious.

Our morning visit was with Les who has been retired from SIM (Serving in Missions) for 6 years now. He and his wife Maxine now have their own ministries with 4 girl homes with almost 10 girls in each one. One of them showed up at his door yesterday, 15 years old and 9 months pregnant. All of their girls are orphaned street kids. They are giving them the Gospel and have several receive Christ as Savior. Besides these girls they are sponsoring 185 kids in schools. They do bible studies, feed others that come to them for food and even have paid rent for a few that come to them as they are being thrown out on the street. They have some strict rules for the girls in their homes such as; no one leaves without permission, they must go to church and attend all church programs appropriate for their age, and one that Bryan and I liked was NO BOYFRIENDS. They do not believe that it is the Christian way of doing things, and it will only get them into more trouble. If and when they are ready to settle down, they will pray seeking Gods will for their mate and Les and his wife will even help them find Mr. Right if they would like. Which some have done.

They also provide medical help, and our driver delivered the 15 year old pregnant girl to the clinic while we were there. It seem as though they are working on the whole picture of poverty. Food, water, health care, medicine, HIV/AIDS testing and treatment, relationships, Teaching the Gospel and even helping the girl’s children find homes though adoption if and when they are ready. Unbelievable! The one girl has not chosen to put her little boy up for adoption yet, and as you can see in the pictures he came to me and then after I gave him back, he wouldn’t let go.

Les runs a tight ship, but it is one that floats on water and is handling the crashing waves. Oh yeah, Les also has a soccer team of 30 boys who need a bible study. Any takers???
Our last stop before we rushed back (if you can do that in Addis) to the Guest House for Dinner was with SIM. We spoke with Donek and Brian and they shared all that they are doing and have been for many, many years. A lot of great information from them, and another cool thing was they ask me if I had ever heard of John Ortberg because he has brought people here. Isn’t it funny that he is the author of the book “If You Want to Walk on Water, You Have to Get Out of the Boat?” The book that I am currently teaching a Sunday school class on.
Before I finish up today we had a visitor tonight after dinner from Ephram. He was a street orphan whose life has been transformed by the love of Christ, and is now working with 100 street kids ranging in age from 6-14 with a soccer ministry besides keeping a job. He is using soccer to build the relationship and try to get the children into schools with sponsorships of around $100/ kid. He is trying to rescue so many as he knows where they are at, as he has been there himself.
To finish up, I must tell you that our driver and interpreter today was Joseph. Another one of Ethiopia’s success stories as he also was a street orphan, and now has a wife, son, job, and home and gives all the credit to Jesus Christ who has transformed his life forever! Amen and Amen
John~

World Vision Ethiopia

World Vision Ethiopia
Monday August 17th 2009

Today was our visit with World Vision Ethiopia and what a day it was! Amazing, Miraculous, Fascinating are only a few words to describe what they are doing here. First I would like to say that they treated us in the most wonderful way that any visitor could be treated, from giving us 15 extra minutes for us to get our breakfast to spending a whole 11 hours with us. Everyone we met with and spoke to were absolutely wonderful people.
Our day started with being picked up right at the guest house we are staying at by Yemane and Wondwossen. We then traveled 123 km or about 77 miles to the Wonche ADP (Area Development Program). I must say that until you’ve been here you can’t comprehend traveling the roads. First of all if your vehicle doesn’t have a horn you better not drive. Once you are sure that the horn is in excellent condition you proceed to dodge the following; cows, goats, oxen, donkeys, dogs, horses, 3 wheeled vehicles, big trucks, small trucks, SUV’s, and let’s not forget the thousands of people including children as small as 3 years old. By the way, you can talk on the phone here at the same time. It’s Great! Really, our driver John, was great and we never felt unsafe the entire day.
When we arrived at the Wonche ADP, we were greeted by the manager Zewde. With another warm greeting he shared that this area program was serving 113,000 people, 2200 households, and contained 5000 “Sponsored Children”. 97% of the people are and speak Oromo. He continued to share all of the areas that World Vision felt need to address in the 5 year plan. With 96.8% of the people farmers, animal care, disease and production were a major concern. Needs of the community were the following, Malaria, Typhoid, Pneumonia, STD’s Maternal Death, HIV/AIDS, FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), low education, child abuse, the low status of women, education of women, concern of the women carrying water very long distances, Lack of health services, child malnutrition, and low child rights and protection.
In the past 8 years they have made HUGE accomplishments like developing 8 springs, drilled 3 wells, built 3 schools, started 215 modern bee hives, started 39,000 seedlings, Started and Apple orchard, planted over 5000 kg of seeds, started a Vet clinic, provided gender training for the status of women, trained 1666 community members in health issues to name a few.
They shared with us that when they started in 2001 that there was only 3 Christians living there and they were worshiping underground with no church. Today there are 4 churches and 1000 Christians! Praise God.
They also have free AIDS/HIV testing for those who are willing to go and free medication for those who test positive.
We visited the home of a girl who lost her parents to AIDS and she was left to care for her Grandfather and her siblings. Because of a sponsorship, she was given 2 sheep for breeding, she sold one and bought clothes; the other multiplied and became 3. She was also given a cow and school material and attends school and has passed the 8th grade. If not for her sponsorship she would not been able to attend school and would have been left to just take care of her Grandfather. Without education we can only imagine the frightful outcome of her life.
We also visited two successful farms that were graduates of the Ag programs with one of them now earning enough that he could built his own house which he proudly showed us and invited us in for roasted chick peas and barley. The other farmer has done so well that he received the Prime Minister Award for outstanding Agriculture. He proudly put on his robe, medallion, and brought out his wife and children so we could take pictures. He picked us each an avocado to show his appreciation of us visiting.
We were treated to a lovely lunch by the World Vision staff and offered to have lunch with the girl who lost her parents, and the “Honored” farmer.
Bryan and I both agreed that anyone who sponsors a child should know just how much and how well World Vision is doing for the whole community as well as the individual that we see on the internet when we decide to start a sponsorship. We are still crushed by the conditions that so many are living in. We have animals in the states living in better conditions then these who Christ died for. What a shame. Forgive us Lord.
We can’t believe how many women and children we saw carrying loads (some for as long as 5-6 miles) that were way too heavy for even a man to carry. Very sad!
What a day! This only scratches the surface of all we saw and information we received. Perhaps I can post more after we are home.
May we truly be thankful for every blessing that God has sent our way, and may we remember that to those that much has been given, much will be expected.
God Bless.
John~

A Meeting with Joe
Sunday August 16, 2009

Today we were picked up by Joe who is connected with the Children’s Home Ethiopia (CHE) and The Forsaken Children (TFC) The Forsaken Children can be searched online and you can learn more about Joe and what he’s doing. Anyway, Joe took us to worship at The International Evangelical Church, which I believe was started by the NGO (Non Government Organization) SIM (Serving in Missions) Enough with the acronyms. IHOP – ok I couldn’t resist!
The church and the service were just like what we would go to at home except for the many different nationalities that were in the congregation. The Pastor was originally from North Carolina, the music was contemporary and all songs were ones that we knew. The people were very inviting and we had a great time praising God with so many from all different countries. The message was about Leadership, and the importance of truly walking like Jesus ALL the time and not just on Sunday! After church I was telling Joe about a man named Les that we are going to meet up with later in the week, and guess who was standing about 10 feet away. Yup, Les. How cool is that. So we set up Wednesday morning to visit what Les and his wife are doing. He retired from SIM 6 years ago, and has been in missions work for I think he said 42 years, 35 in Africa. When I asked him where he was from he said the states so I said which one in which he replied that he has lived in 14 of them! He is one of 10 siblings, one that lives in Utica. But now they have set up 4 girl’s homes for orphans. Anyway more on Les after we meet (Ha Ha, More on Les! Get it? No pun intended but still funny anyway, or maybe just sleep deprivation)
Alright then, It seem as though working with CHE will work with and for us as a church, so it’s time to go home and see my beautiful wife and kids! Hold it, not so fast, I remind all of you, the week is still young and no decisions will be made until all people have been met with and prayed over. So that is all I’m saying now.
Bryan and I are both doing quite well except for missing our wives and children and other than this slow dial up internet service things are great.(But Praise God it is up and running)
We have met 3 adoptive families and have swapped adoption stories with each other. The Coolest thing is that each story is unique, except for the fact that God has truly moved his hand in each one to make them the same and perfect!
As you can tell from my writing, I need some sleep! So God bless you all, keep up the prayers, and for all the Red Sox fans – Would you look at those Yankees GO!
John~

Greetings From Ethiopia!

Saturday Night 11:59 PM Ethiopian Time

Greetings everyone!

Bryan and I have safely arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with touchdown time around 8:50 PM.

A few of our flights were delayed (starting w/Elmira to Detroit) but all connections were made with no difficulty. We have many names, phone numbers, and contact information. It is are prayer that not only will God revile to us what we should do with a larger group from our church in February, but that God would use us while we are there to make a difference in the lives of whom we come in contact with.
We will be spending a full day with World Vision, worshipping God in the International Evangelical Church, speaking with nationals and Americans who are doing their best to change the lives of the "Least of These". We also have several orphanages outside of Addis Ababa to visit, as well as just talking with some of the local people to build relationships and to share the love of Christ.
We are starting to pack our checked bags with donations for some of the Orphanages, and pray that we will bring just what they need. Things like baby formula, diapers, wipes, bottle nipples, and lollipops for the kids.
With all this coming down in two weeks, we are excited but also have the stress of finances, leaving our wives and children behind, and making sure things are as close to being in order as they can be.
Please pray for the following things:
1. Our wives and children as they miss their Dads, and try to keep the daily routines going without us.
2. For peace and the love of Christ to reign in our homes.
3. For the rest of our financial needs to be met.
4. For Bryan and I to stay healthy and safe the entire trip.
5. For all of our connecting, flights, and appointments to be God ordained.
6. For Bryan and I to be FLEXABLE, loving and understanding in all circumstances.
and finally, that God would break our hearts by the things that are breaking His, That He would give us His eyes to see what he sees, and just to use us to our fullest the entire trip.
We need clarity, discernment and the prompting of the Spirit to move us in the right direction with His Love and Grace!
John~

Febuary 2009 Pictures From Ethiopia

Below are photos from the city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia when we were there in February of 2009. The more I search, the more I find. The more I put self aside, the more God has worked.
The most transforming event that has taken place thus far in my life has just happen this past February (2009), as I traveled to Ethiopia with my Wife, my 11 year old son, and a 14 year old friend of our family, to adopt 3 girls ages 3, 10, and 13. [You can read about all of our adoption stories at http://www.contentmentinthechaos.blogspot.com/ ] I have never felt or seen God move like this before in our lives. It all started in February of 2008. We had 6 children, 4 biological and 2 adopted from South Korea, and my wife shared that she felt as though God was calling us to adopt again. This was a shock to both of us as we felt that we were all done having children, and were going to start living a "normal" life. You know, plans of children growing up, moving out, and retirement. Well God had other plans for us.
This was the beginning for us to stop looking at how we could live our lives, but instead live the life that God wants us to live. Time to forget "OUR" plans and look to Him for direction. It was at this point that the words to the song "March Out' by Fort Pastor really spoke to me. We all are selfish to the core from birth and we can make all kinds of excuses as to why we can't do, serve or help, but when we are willing to truly live for Christ, we must put that selfishness behind us and "March Out". Another song that spoke to me was Brandon Heath's song "Give me Your Eyes". This coupled with Marching Out, and praying that God would break my heart by the things that break His heart truly have transformed me. Please take the time to watch and listen to them.
Anyway as we pursued the call of adoption, we were stunned that Ethiopia would be the place that God called us to, and totally blown away that He would trust us with raising not one or two but 3 more of His precious children. After realizing where He wanted us to go, I knew that He was calling me to go and not just to bring the girls home, but for something else. As we traveled to bring the girls home, I prayed that He would show me what He wanted me to see and do while we were there, and He did. I was broken by the poverty, and crushed by the number of orphans. It is estimated that between 4 and 6 million orphans are living in Ethiopia, or should I say trying to survive day by day. We visited a 'Drop in Center" for street children and had a chance to make "Wordless" bracelets and necklaces for them and share the gospel of Jesus with them. The hunger for love and affection of these children was overwhelming. We we left the center and drove away quietly, trying to process what we just experienced.
This was what God wanted me to see. The need. The hunger. The poverty. The lack of Love. The sting that death has left behind. The need for Christians to show the unconditional love that Jesus freely offers to everyone.
After returning home, Ethiopia is still calling out to me, but I can see how easy it can be to be sucked back into the "rich" American life style and forget about all those less fortunate than us. After all, when I wake up in my beautiful home, stuff myself with 3 meals a day not to mention all the snacks, go to work, and come home to my beautiful wife and family that all bathe regularly, why would I want to think about an country whose unemployment rate is over 60%, all those who only get 1 piece of bread a day to eat if that. And what about those who don't even have a place to sleep, or a parent to give them a hug or kiss. Who wants to think about them? JESUS, that's who! He sees every single one of them. He sees every tear, hungry belly, and pain that they feel. But why me? Because "what ever I do to the least of them, I have done it to Him". He as called me out of my comfort zone, out unto the unknown. It is time to listen to the "Voice of "Truth", and make a difference. To March Out so to speak. To see what Jesus sees, and to do something about it!
So this blog will follow my journey as Christ lead me to travel, plan, and make a difference in Ethiopia with the orphans. This will start this August with a 1 week trip with a Church friend of mine named Bryan. We will head to Addis Ababa planning a Missions Trip for our Church for February of 2010. Please pray for us as we seek to do His will!
In Christ,
John~

Brandon Heath Video of "Give Me Your Eyes"

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v9.nonxt7.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D734dd692255a1faf%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331485274%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D78328D6A07355074B8157E16E5AB13F56B5FDE78.4EA7B6724962A24B28B9C4DD4297DB100B095564%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D734dd692255a1faf%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DE0usONtn6bZFTuUEY6haerzVS8A&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

You can see the March Out Video by Fort Pastor by clicking this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsSUr7ChMPI
